From Saskatchewan to San Mateo: Nevaeh Carlson Gets to Work

Nevaeh Carlson had come a long way to get her recruiting video made. Once she stepped onto the field, she was ready to work.

During her three-hour session with Randy Villazon, a drill didn’t go the way she wanted. Nevaeh owned the mistake and did it again. She kept at it until she got it right.

That gave Randy a good look at the kind of player he was working with.

“Great attitude and very coachable,” he said.

The class of 2028 outfielder had traveled from Martensville, Saskatchewan, to the College of San Mateo to film with Fast Pitch Media. She plays for 222’s Fastpitch, a travel and training program based in Saskatoon, and first found FPM on Instagram.

Then she made the trip south to show her game.

Watch her bat. Then watch her run.

Nevaeh hits left-handed and has a few ways to get on base.

In her video, she shows a hard slap, a chop slap, and a full swing. She credits her hitting instructor, Keith Mackintosh of 222’s Fastpitch, for helping her build those skills.

Out in the field, she throws right-handed and puts her arm and speed to work. Watch her move through the drills, then stay for the run around the bases: home to home in 11.2 seconds.

She also carries a 3.4 GPA.

Those details help coaches get a fuller picture of Nevaeh. The video gives them a chance to watch her skills for themselves.

Three hours on the field with Randy

Randy calls Nevaeh a student of the game.

She came prepared. She spoke up with confidence. She was ready to show the work she had put into her slapping and outfield play.

And when something needed another try, she was willing to take it.

Over three hours, Randy got to see how she worked, listened, and responded to mistakes. Nevaeh brought her skills to the session, along with the attitude to keep improving them.

She represented 222’s Fastpitch well.

A long trip, and plenty of company

Nevaeh’s trip from Canada adds to a long list of players who have traveled to work with FPM.

Randy has filmed athletes from Hawaii and Alaska, Florida and Washington, DC, and states such as Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, and Idaho. Others come from right here in California.

Each player brings her own game. The work is to help her show it clearly, so a coach can watch and decide whether she may fit a program.

FPM’s Instagram page now reaches more than 20,000 followers. It’s where Nevaeh found Randy, and where more families can get to know the players and see the work.

Over the years, FPM has worked with more than 1,400 players who have gone on to commit to college programs. They include Brooke Arce at Oregon State, Trinity Onigbanjo at the University of South Carolina, and Stacey Kraushar at Lehigh University.

Nevaeh is still working toward her next step.
